As an environmental educator, I’m always looking for environmental science worksheets for students. Environmental science education is so important to understand, not just for the school curriculums, but also for how we live our daily lives. When we understand our environment and think of ourselves as part of planet Earth, we are more likely to appreciate natural resources and our impact on climate change.
I’ve created an entire journal of printable environmental science worksheets that target 6th – 12 grade. Within this journal, there is a focus on subject areas including earth sciences, physical science, and environmental studies.
I’ve included a full breakdown of printable environmental science worksheets for high school students!
Understanding Greenhouse Gases and Advantages and Disadvantages of the Greenhouse Effect
With these printable Environmental Science worksheets students learn about the greenhouse effect and how human activities release greenhouse gases.
Students use a word bank to match the source to the correct source of greenhouse gas in these printable environmental science worksheets. Next, students write one way to reduce each greenhouse gas in their own words. The purpose of this worksheet is to understand that greenhouse gases are naturally released into the environment, but there is a human impact that drives the amount of gases released. An answer key is provided!
Students need to understand necessary information regarding greenhouse gases including that the greenhouse effect isn’t all bad! In fact, without it, we wouldn’t be able to survive on Earth. Students will read an article about the advantages and disadvantages of the greenhouse effect and list them.
Climate Change
In this section of the eco journal, I’ve created printable environmental science worksheets to focus on climate change. These can be used as independent work as well as a close reading exercise.
Evidence of Climate Change and Trends in Climate Change
With these printable environmental science worksheets, students will visit these websites to fill out the worksheet below. Next, the student will write a sentence or two explaining how global warming has impacted each of the features mentioned.
A trend shows how something is changing. For this printable worksheet, we’re focusing on trends to help understand how scientists understand how our Earth is responding to global warming. This worksheet will require some problem-solving skills. Students will have to use critical thinking to pay attention to the website and search for the correct answer.
Earth’s Nutrient Cycles
Students will use this booklet to learn and identify the carbon, phosphorus, and nitrogen cycle. The booklet is a hands-on way to understand each of the cycles and gives students a quick reference guide to help distinguish between them.
Ecosystems
Understanding ecosystems is incredibly important in our fascinating world of science. An ecosystem is a geographic area where plants, animals, and other organisms, as well as weather and landscapes, work together to form a bubble of life (National Geographic).
Coloring Pages/Roles in an Ecosystem
To make the definition of ecosystems a little different, these printable environmental science worksheets are coloring pages depicting ecosystems. There is an information sheet about the difference between terrestrial ecosystems and aquatic ecosystems. These ecosystem coloring sheets can be found on my TPT store and can even be used for 4th grade and up to teach how ecosystems are made up of both living and nonliving things.
From producers and herbivores to carnivores and decomposers, these sets of worksheets explain roles in an ecosystem as well as the flow of energy. These also help students differentiate between abiotic and biotic factors.
Human Impact on the Environment
Are you looking to focus the bringing awareness to human impact on the environment? These are the printable environmental science worksheets for you!
Composting
Composting is the process of recycling organic material. I use this simple activity as a science lesson to show the power of decomposition. For the activity, your students will make their own compost activity. I talk more about making compostable understandable in a blog post here! This activity is an interactive learning experience that allows the student to observe what happens to their compost over time. If you’re looking for interactive printable environmental science worksheets you can laminate and use over and over again, check out my sorting game on Teachers Pay Teachers.
Earth Friendly Trivia
Looking for some fun ways to talk about facts about the Earth? I’ve got you covered. This is especially fun on Earth Day for middle school students. The students can do this activity on their own answering their questions with their own basic facts based on what they have learned. This worksheet talks about renewable energy as well as fossil fuels. The questions from this worksheet can also be used as a teacher time saver for an exit ticket or entry ticket!
Mini Eco Home Audit
This is honestly how I like to start my human impact unit. For students to truly understand the world of environmental science, it is important to understand how we a part of the environment. Following topics outlined in the audit, these worksheets serve as a great starter to access their home to see how their actions may play a role in their carbon footprint. When I used this audit in the past, not only were students surprised by the results, but the parents were too! They then used this worksheet as a basis for change in their home.
Nature Walk
Time to get outside! The best way to create a love for nature is to spend more time in our natural world. This fun Nature Walk Journal can honestly be used in so many different ways! This can be used as a life science activity. This can also be used for an early learner to focus on fine motor skills with the collection piece. Students have a space on the worksheet to write what items they collected and draw them.
These worksheets were created as a science curriculum bundle focusing on climate change and human impact. They’re created to supplement lessons around this topic at a homeschool or classroom pace. These activities can also be extended for a more interactive experience.
This blog includes printable environmental science worksheets from a 34-page eco journal as a great way to help your students understand you’re never too small to make a difference!
