My Favorite Kind of Cloth Diaper: Pocket Diaper
My favorite kind of diaper is the pocket diaper. I’ve tried a few types of cloth diapers, but pocket diapers work the best for our family.
Why Pocket Cloth Diapers?
1.) I love pocket diapers because they grow with Baby Boy. I’ve been able to use the same cloth diapers since we started our cloth diapering journey. I use the snaps to adjust the diaper to fit his body. This brand of diapers fits starting at 3 pounds up to 33 pounds.
2.) There are no accessories needed. Just the diaper and the pocket insert.
3.) They don’t take long to dry.
Step by Step Pocket Cloth Diaper Tutorial
Step 1
Be sure to wash the diapers before your baby wears them. Most cloth diapering brands recommend washing the diapers a few times to reach full absorbency.
I’ll be honest, we only washed our diapers twice before he wore them. We washed the diapers once when we first got them and again after Baby Boy was born before we began our cloth diapering journey.
Only washing twice worked for us! In addition, about half of his cloth diaper stash was pre-owned or thrifted so they had already been washed several times. You can air-dry your diapers or dry them in the dryer.
Step 2
Have a stash of extra inserts. These diapers come with two inserts per diaper. This allows for an extra diaper insert always ready. The inserts usually take the longest to dry so it is nice to always have a backup.
If the brand of diapers you choose doesn’t come with extra diaper inserts, be sure to purchase some.
Most often, pocket diapers come with microfiber inserts.
These microfiber inserts are the super absorbent portion of the diaper. The better your insert, the easier your life will be (less leaks and spillage)
I would recommend having a few charcoal cloth diaper inserts as well. These are EXTRA absorbent.
Charcoal liners tend to be a little more pricey so I only had a handful of them. I would use these when we were taking Baby Boy out for the day and he may have to go longer without a diaper change.
You can double up on liners. This is helpful at night or a time you need extra absorbency. Personally, I don’t double up on liners often because of the extra bulk.
Step 3
Now that your diapers are washed and dried, it is time to stuff them. My husband and I stuff diapers while watching Netflix at the end of the night. It usually takes less than 15 minutes!
Step 4
Time to put the diaper on your baby!
The top row is used to adjust to your baby’s waist.
The second row is used to adjust to your baby’s thighs.
The bottom three rows are used to make the diaper bigger or smaller. For size large leave all three buttons open. For size medium snap the top button to the middle row. For size small snap the to button to the bottom row.
Step 5
Unsnap the diaper and remove the pocket insert.
Step 6
Place the diaper cover and the pocket insert inside your wet bag.
Step 7
Wash your cloth diapers every few days. I wouldn’t wait longer than three days! Washing every one to two days is preferred.
Where to buy cloth diapers
1.) Second-hand baby stores. This is how I experimented with different types of diapers until I found the type I liked the most.
2.) Online
Cloth diapering can save you hundreds of dollars per child. Personally, it has saved my family over $1000. More than that, it has saved thousands of diapers from being sent to the landfill. That is extremely important to me.
Once you get the hang of it, reusable diapers become second nature! They’re fun, environmentally friendly, and better for your baby’s skin. I hope you give them a try and I hope this step-by-step pocket cloth diaper tutorial was helpful. Are you a cloth diapering momma? Have you used pocket diapers before?
