Eco Friendly Tips and Tricks for Summer
- Put your plants in shade! If possible, move your plants into the shade or put some shade over your plants. Too much sun can deydrate your plants and make it hard to keep them thriving.
- Skip individually packed items when possible, even on the go.
- Enourge your kids to connect to nature. Did you know kids who are connected to nature are happier, care more about the environment, and are better behaved and kinder (source).
- Compost your food! Composting helps to reduce the amount of methane emitted into the atmosphere by preventing food from going to the landfill. In the summer, compost thrives because the microorganisms are more active and moving. If you haven’t composted before, summertime is a great opporunity to start!
- Use fans as often as possible to reduce energy output from your AC.
- Use natural light as often as possible to reduce energy from your electricity.
- Be conscious of water use to limit wasting water.

Eco Friendly Tips and Tricks for Spring
- When you’re grabbing your fresh fruit this season, leave the fruit out to encourge eating! A great way to decrease food waste is to leave fruit out in a fruit bowl on the counter.
- Eat outside more! At a restaurant, in the backyard, at a park. We’re trapped inside for so much of our day, enjoy a meal outdoors and take in the nature vibes.
- Go on a walk! I cannot stress this one enough. A walk to the mailbox, to the neighbors house, around the block, or a getting in a few miles! Whatever you have time for. I promise it’s a mood booster!
- Enjoy your coffee outside. Coffee is a must for me in the mornings. Squeeze in some extra time outdoors by enjoying your coffee outside. A study showed that exposure to sunlight in the morning causes our body to produce serotonin – helping our nighttime sleep and improving our mood (1000 hours outside).

- Use the downtime of the season to declutter and minimize. Decluttering helps to clear up space physically and mentally! It also helps to simplify decision-making because you have fewer choices to make and can focus on what matters. Make sure not to fill up the empty spaces with more stuff! Consuming less and minimizing waste also helps to reduce demand for new products.
- Seal up the gaps in your home. Sealing up gaps helps to make sure heat is not escaping and cold winter air is not coming in. This can help with your energy bills.
- Layer up and get outside. Spending time in nature is beneficial not only for your body, but also for your mind! Even in the winter, try to bundle up and get outside. To help warm yourself up and romanticize your outdoor adventure, grab something warm and yummy to drink. Just a few minutes outside can provide significant benefits to your mood and mental health.
- Lowering your thermostat in the winter saves energy. The smaller the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the lower your overall cooling bill will be. You can easily save energy in the winter by setting the thermostat to around 68F while you’re awake.
- If you’re getting Valentine’s Day flowers, add a few drops of vodka to your cut flowers to extend the life! Vodka delays the ripening agent in flowers, making them last longer. Learn more here.
