As summer comes to a close and the fall season begins, it is time to start gathering school supplies for the upcoming school year. Depending on the grade your child is in, depends on the type of supplies you’ll need. This year, instead of picking the standard, well-known school supply brands, opt for eco friendly school supplies instead!

I’ve created a great list of common school supplies with eco friendly and nontoxic alternatives! As a parent of two kids and an environmental educator, I know how important reliable school supplies are for a successful education year. The supplies in this post are sure to not only benefit your child but also lower your impact on the planet.

Throughout this blog post, keep in mind that as humans on this planet, everything we do has an impact on the planet. I always talk about making the best environmental decision for your family at any given time, depending on your circumstances. School supplies are no exception! You may not be able to buy all the eco friendly school supplies I’ve listed below, but this will give you an idea of options to help lower your impact and create a more sustainable supply closet!

1. Pencils (#2 and mechanical)

Are you team mechanical pencil or wooden pencil? Check out these alternatives to traditional pencils!

Grab this 5-pack of pencils that give back. After you’re finished with these pencils you can plant them! These pencils are lead-free and contain either herb, flower, or vegetable seeds. The entire pencil is biodegradable making this an excellent zero waste option for students! In addition, the box these pencils come in is FSC certified. Every tree that is harvested is replaced by planting another one.

If you’re looking for something more traditional, check out this Bic Revolution pen made from 65% recycled plastic. Choosing recycled plastic is always nice because it promotes a circular economy. Anytime we can make a product using materials that have already been extracted, we are decreasing our impact and being more eco friendly!

2. Notebook (spiral, bound, composition)

This is the coolest notebook I’ve ever seen! You can instantly erase this notebook and make it brand new by microwaving it! Yup, reuse this notebook over and over again using the included pen. Download their app to easily convert your notes into your Dropbox or Google cloud!

3. Crayons

These Honeystick crayons are perfectly sized for toddlers’ hands! They’re large and chunky and made from 100% beeswax! These crayons write incredibly well and don’t contain the traditional waxy feeling associated with regular crayons.

4. Highlighters

Have you ever heard of highlighter crayons? These eco pencils are made from wood instead of plastic! The highlighter pencil glides easily and shows up well on paper. These may not be the best highlighters for glossy paper in magazines or textbooks, but regular paper without shine is very compatible with these highlighters.

5. Pencil Case

Here is the perfect pencil case for your eco friendly pencils. This organic pencil case is made from organic cotton. Terra Thread is the company of this sustainable school supply. The company is carbon neutral and a certified B Corp.

Whether you’re a college student or school shopping for your child’s first day of school, markers are a staple on the eco friendly back to school supplies list! I’m not in school and I still use markers. They’re perfect for planners, writing lists, and doing crafts. Here are some of my favorite eco friendly markers:

Onyx and Green glue sticks are plant-based glue sticks! This makes them non-toxic and extremely kid-friendly. These glue sticks are not messy and dry clear!

8. Eraser

Don’t forget to add these eco friendly erasers to your eco friendly school supplies! Made from recycled rubber erasers. These erasers are sustainable and work well. 9. Scissors

These scissors are great eco friendly school supplies because they’re made from recycled plastic handles! I’ll always advocate for materials made from recycled plastic because taking items that would otherwise be waste and making them into something usable is essential to sustainability.

If your child is a prime snacker like mine, these silicone Bento boxes are the best! Mix and match different snacks to make lunchtime even more fun. These bento boxes are dishwasher safe, durable, and leakproof!

11. Snack Packs

As you gather your eco friendly school supplies, don’t forget about these reusable snack packs! I have tried many reusable snack bags, many. These are the best reusable snack packs available! They are incredibly durable and thick. They zip well and clean easily in the dishwasher. These are pricey because they will last for years and are so versatile. Use them for snacks, sandwiches, or even to store school supplies if you need to!

12. Backpack

No back-to-school eco-friendly school supplies are complete without a backpack! If you’re not reusing your backpack from the previous year(s), check out this book bag from Terra Thread! I especially love that it doesn’t leave your hands wet and sticky! The scent is light and this is so easy for on the go.

14. Folders

Folders are a necessity for students to store their papers and other important materials. These pocket folders are both eco friendly and zero waste. The paper is made from 100% recycled fiber. You can choose various colors or stick to the natural color pictured below.

15. Dry erase markers

These markers not only work incredibly well, but they’re also refillable. Having refillable options is great because you can use them over and over again.

16. Pens

I love these pens because they are made from recycled bottles! Being that only 9% of plastic actually gets recycled, it is great to support an initiative that is working to use recycled materials to create something new!

17. Printer Paper and Loose-leaf paper

No eco friendly school supplies list is complete without paper! Virgin paper us up a large number of trees and water. By purchasing recycled paper, you are reducing waste, conserving water, and contributing to a more circular economy. Paper is one of the top items found in landfills! Recycling paper and buying items made of recycled paper is incredibly important to help you reduce your impact and have a more sustainable school year!

18. Solar Powered Scientific Calculator

A solar-powered calculator! This calculator is tried and true. It is not only lightweight and durable, but you also don’t have to worry about changing the batteries. This calculator can be used for basic calculations, trigonometry, and calculus.

19. Index cards

Index cards make the perfect study tool during the school year. Add these index cards to your eco friendly school supplies list because they’re made from recycled paper! These index cards are still easy to write on and hold ink well.

20. Protractor and Ruler

This bamboo set of protractors by Onyx and Green are great eco friendly school supplies that will be both sustainable and effective. 22. Planner

There are so many planners available. Happy Planner is my favorite because they are vibrant, inspirational, motivational, and refillable! At first, I didn’t understand the concept of refillable planners, but now I love them! You can buy new pages to go inside your planner and keep the cover instead of constantly having to buy a new planner. It also means you can add pages to your planner as needed. There are so many options for Happy Planners, but here is a great one from Target!

23. Reusable water bottle

Don’t forget the reusable bottles! I’ve tried a lot of reusable water bottles and this Hydro Flask is the best water bottle I’ve ever owned. It has survived many falls (including one from the top of my car once I pulled off and forget it was there) and it keeps my water ice cold. I can fill it up with ice and it will remain cold all day long. There is a larger size for adults, but also smaller sizes for kids.

24. Paper Towels

Instead of traditional paper towels made from trees, try Reel paper towels! These paper towels are made from bamboo. Bamboo is a much more sustainable plant that regenerates quickly! These paper towels are still incredibly absorbent and efficient, but they’re also more gentle on the planet!

25. Liquid Soap

If your child is in pre-K or elementary school we know hand soap is definitely on the school supply list. You can still make it eco-friendly! This school year, try Everyone Hand Soap. Not only does this soap smell amazing, but it is also certified by EWG and is non toxic. This product is not tested on animals, cleans well, and is incredibly gentle on the skin!

26. Binders

If binders are on your list this year, you’ll want to try these plant-based binders! Yes! Plant-based. These binders are made with both plant-based and recyclable materials making it a great choice for your backpack, and the planet. These specific binders are 1.5 inches thick and come in a few color designs. They’re sturdy and built to last with natural materials. Using these binders is another way to decrease your plastic waste with eco friendly school supplies this year! 

27. Pencil Organizer

Keep those pencils tidy with an organizer made from recycled materials. Look for ones crafted from bamboo or recycled plastic. Bamboo pencil organizers are not only aesthetic, but also eco friendly! Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants and regnerates quickly making it more sustainable than traditional plastic pencil organizers.

28. Pencil Sharpener

Say goodbye to plastic shavings with a metal pencil sharpener. I love these metal pencil sharpeners! These sharpeners last longer and can be recycled at the end of their life cycle. Plus, they’re more sturdy than the plastic ones. The blades are quality which helps to guaranteed a sharpened pencil without chipped lead pieces!

29. Colored Pencils

Opt for colored pencils made from sustainably sourced wood. Brands like Faber-Castell and Staedtler offer fantastic options that are both vibrant and environmentally friendly.

30. Ruler

Try a bamboo ruler! I love this Onyx and Green wood which is crafted from natural bamboo. Instead of traditional plastic rulers, this material is more environmentally friendly. The ruler is packaged in plastic-free, recyclable packaging and works great.

31. Tape

When it comes to eco friendly tape, I have a hard time finding tape that actually works, but also has a more positive impact on the environment. Currently I use the Magic Tape dispenser that is made from 60% recycled material. Whiel this isn’t 100% recyclable, it does use some recyclable materials which helps to encourage a market for recycling.

32. Stapler

This stapler is made out of wood! This item is a must-have for paper products when you’re considering your eco friendly school supplies list. This wooden stapler is a plastic-free option for school supplies.  

If wooden staplers are not your thing, try this stapleless stapler! Since staplers are single use, using a stapler that doesn’t use staples is a great sustainable item to include in your eco friendly school supplies list!

33. Paper Clips

Did you know paper clips are more sustainable than staplers because they can reused over and over again? Staples, on the other hand, are single-use items. While I understand the need for a stapler and think it is important to have one with you, if you’re looking for sustainable school supplies that can be reused, consider some paperclips!

34. Dictionary

Instead of a traditional paper dictionary, consider using an app or online resource. But if you prefer a physical book, opt for dictionaries printed on recycled paper. They’re durable and eco-friendly!

35. Umbrella

A durable, eco-friendly umbrella made from 100% recyclable plastic bottles! This umbrella is perfect for those unexpected rain showers. Not only are you covered from the rain, but also showering the Earth with some love as well. Orginial Duckhead is a fantastic brand with quality materials that are not only beautiful, but also long lasting.

36. Tissues

Try tree free facial tissues! These tissues are often made from bamboo and are a more sustainable alternative to traditional facial tissues. This helps with deforestation and reducing waste! They’re soft, strong, and much kinder to the environment.

37. Sunscreen

Protect your skin and the planet with eco-friendly sunscreen. Look for mineral-based sunscreens that come in recyclable or compostable packaging. They’re gentle on your skin and the ocean!

After thinking about the amount of single-use waste I was accumulating with traditional tampons and still leaking at night, I decided it was worth a try. I started out only using period panties at night as a “backup” and have loved them so much they’re now part of my regular, monthly routine.

Yup, turns out that most of the things I worried about were period panty myths. If you’ve been thinking about wearing period panties, but are not really ready to make the switch because of all those period panty myths – you’re not alone and I hope this post helps!

I’m breaking down 15 period panty myths that might be holding you back from making the switch—because once you know the truth, you might just wonder why you didn’t try them sooner.

Today, we’re busting the 15 biggest period panties myths that might be keeping you from trying them.

Period Panty Myth 1: Period panties are just like “granny panties”

Truth: There are so many designs for period panties, you’re not limited to the traditional panty style! From boxer briefs and shorts to thongs, period panties have evolved to accommodate all types of menstruating people. They’re designed with specialized, absorbent, and leak-proof layers.

Period Panty Myth 2: They’re gross and unsanitary.

Truth: Period panties are not unsanitary because they are machine washable, making them easy to clean and reuse. The most recommended method is to first rinse period panties in the sink immediately after use until the water runs clear and place in the washer. I understand this can be gross to some so instead I recommend using a wet bag to store period panties after use. Once full, empty the period panty contents into the washer, along with the wet bag. Air dry your period panties for best results because the dryer can ruin the absorbant fibers. I’m a cloth diaper mom so this process was incredibly familiar to me.

Period Panty Myth 3: Period panties can’t handle a heavy flow.

Truth: Period panties are highly absorbent and some can even hold up to 4 tampons’ worth of blood. If you’re skeptical about whether or not period panties can hold your flow, start by using period panties as a backup or once your flow slows, towards the end of your period.

Period Panty Myth 4: They leak easily.

Truth: I’ve never had a leak and on average, leaks are rare. This is in contrast to the many leaks I’ve had using single-use tampons and pads.

Period Panty Myth 5: Period underwear is only for teens or beginners.

Truth: Period panties are for all ages! To be honest, as a mom of two, these period panties are even more useful for me know. I’m sure I’m not the only one, but my body is very different post

Period Panty Myth 6: You have to change them constantly, like a pad.

Truth: Each pair of period panties lasts about 8-12 hours. To be safe, you can change every 6-10 hours. For me, the relief of going an 8-hour work day without the fear of changing my tampon every few hours.

Period Panty Myth 7: They’re uncomfortable and bulky.

Truth: While some designs can be bulky, not all of them are! Traditional period panties have a pantyline because they are not seamless, but there are so many styles, you can choose less bulky and more seamless options. See Myth 1 for examples!

Period Panty Myth 8: They’re bad for sensitive skin.

Truth: Period panties are great for sensitive skin as many brands are made from organic cotton and hypoallergenic materials. Some period panty brands are diligent in their efforts to reduce toxins and PFAS (also known as “forever chemicals”). I’ve created an entire post comparing various brands of period underwear including prices and PFAS detected.

Period Panty Myth 9: They’re not eco-friendly because you’re washing them more.

Truth: Believe it or not, washing uses way less water and energy than producing disposable pads/tampons!

Period Panty Myth 10: They’re super expensive and not worth it.

Truth: Yes, period panties are more expensive initially. For example, this 3-pack set costa about $11 per panty. That is equivalent to one to two boxes of tampons, depending on location and brand. These period panties can be used over and over again while those boxes of tampons have to be repurchased every month. Once you build your stash, you are free from the constant worry of having to restock your menstrual cycle supplies.

Period Panty Myth 11: Only certain body types can wear them.

Truth: Size inclusivity is important and some period panty brands have a long way to go. In my experience, I’ve had to size up for every period panty I’ve purchased for a comfortable fit. That being said, period panties come in various sizes for all body types. The Period Company period panties, for example, can size up to 5X.

Period Panty Myth 12: You can’t exercise in them.

Truth: If you’re anything like me and you’re very conscious of your panty line, this is not the time to wear the tightest leggings in your drawer. However, if you have decent running shorts or yoga pants, you can wear your period panties without fear of a panty line showing. Honestly, my period panties are even more comfortable because I don’t have to worry about my pad sliding! EW! Sorry, just being real here!

Period Panty Myth 13: They smell bad after a few uses.

Truth: As long as you properly wash and dry your period panties, there’s no odor! Anti-odor tech and moisture-wicking layers help with making sure there is no bad smell.

Period Panty Myth 14: You can’t wear period panties overnight.

Truth: Period panties are the BEST for overnight. I don’t have to wake up to change at all! I used to be half-sleep trying to change my tampon in the middle of the night, but period panties have changed that. If I’m having extra heavy flow, I also don’t have to worry about leaking because i can pair it with traditional period products.

Period Panty Myth 15: You can’t wear them with a tampon or menstrual cup.

Truth: You can! A lot of people use period panties as a backup for heavy-flow days. If you’re just starting out and apprehensive, this is my recommended method or trying them on low-flow days.

Period panties have made that “time of the month” so much more enjoyable! And I hope personal experience with period panties help to bust those period panty myths and rethink what they’ve heard!

I used to dread my period. Every month, like clockwork, my body cycled through the follicular, ovulation, luteal, and—of course—menstruation phases. While the follicular phase is my golden era where I bask in my energy and productivity, the reality is that my period still shows up uninvited every month. And with it? Cramps, mood swings, and a healthy dose of anxiety about leaking through my jeans at preschool drop-off.

Instead of spending another month stressing over leaks and dreading constant tampon changes, I wanted to try something different to make my period easier, more comfortable, and way less wasteful.

Instead of simply trying one brand, I wanted to try multiple brands to test for various factors. I tried 5 most popular period panty brands to compare their pricing, key features, PFAS/toxin levels and advantages.

What I Wish I Knew Before These Buying Period Panty Brands

PFAS Research: If you didn’t hear, there was a large lawsuit against Thinx for having PFAS (forever checmals) in their period panty products. The company paid up to $5 million and agreed to make changes to marketing and production (source). To help with this step, make sure to do your own independent research and double check claims such as “PFAS Free”.

Sizing: You’re going to want to size up! I feel like sizing is the part people don’t talk about, but it is debatably one of the most important parts of the shopping process. What size are you? In my experience, size up. When I’m on my period I don’t want anything tight or hugging my stomach in anyway. I want to have breathable room and feel comfortable. In addition, you’re going to be washing these period panties – a lot. So it could be nice to have a slightly bigger size to decrease the risk of shrinkage.

Washing: I use a wet bag to store my period panties. Once I change my panties, I place it into the wet bag. Every other day I’ll empty the contents of the wet bag and also throw in the wet bag and wash. You want to avoid drying, this is because it can cause the absorbency fibers in the period panties to deteriorate and stop doing as good of a job – that’s when you’ll have to start worrying about leaks. Instead, air dry them! I like to use this dryer rack.

Period panties can be a great solution for you if you’re looking for period product alternatives that are zero waste and plastic free!

The Period Company

If you need serious protection without spending a fortune, The Bikini Period for Heavy Flow is a game-changer. This pair absorbs more than a tampon which makes it perfect for heavy days or even overnight. The organic cotton is soft and it holds up well after multiple washes. For such a budget friendly brand, this period panty brand really offers leakproof protection which is why it is one of my favorites. Don’t forget to size up!

Thinx

If comfort is your top priority, Ultra Soft High Waist by Thinx is worth the investment! The fabric is buttery soft, and the high-waisted fit provides gentle support. This period panty is perfect for bloating days.

It’s lightweight, but still absorb well. I also love the fact that these panties are not bulky. While it’s on the pricier side, the durability and comfort make it a solid choice for anyone looking to replace pads or tampons entirely.

Saalt Wear

I cannot believe period panty thongs exist! I was so happy when I realized I didn’t have to give up cute undies just because my period started. The Hanky Panky Original Thong by Saalt Wear is soft, stretchy, and actually absorbs period flow without that diaper-y feel. This is great for low flow days, days when you’re only spotting, or days when you don’t feel like having a panty line!

Knix

If you’re worried about panty lines, but your flow is too heavy for the thong I mentioned above, Super Leakproof No-Show French Cut by Knix could be for you! It’s seamless, super absorbent, and honestly, feels like a second skin. I can wear these under leggings or dresses, and not worry about leaks or panty lines.

Modibodi

Instead of planning your next beach day vacation around your period, you can grab this Swimwear One Piece by Modibodi. When I wore this swimsuit I was so worried I would feel soggy and unfortable, but I didn’t! I felt confident and knew that even when I got out of the water I wouldn’t have to worry about a tampon string or a leak.

Bambody

The Bambody Leakproof Reusable Underwear are some of the first period panties I ever purchased! They’re affordable and they actually work. The bamboo fabric makes the fabric soft and not scratchy which I like. While they’re not top quality, they are great for beginners or for budget-conscious, low waste periods!

If you’re going to make date night a priority, you have to prepare. Let’s be honest…we’re tired, we’re irritated, and there are a million other things we could be doing with our time, BUT we also know how important it is to maintain a healthy relationship with our partner. 

In order to clear your mind so you can truly be present for your date night, prepare for it. Here are some ways to prepare for your at-home spa date night

Eliminate the excuses

Don’t let the status of your home or the unchecked items on your to-do list be a barrier to your relaxing date night.

If you need to have a clean home to truly relax, make sure you have the house clean before you start your at-home spa date night.

Similarly, if you know you have to put the kids down for bed before you and your partner can have the alone time you need, make sure the kids are put to bed ON TIME.

Don’t allow anything to stop you from committing to the time you’ve set aside for your at-home date night.

Turn off the distractions

To reiterate, the purpose of this at-home spa night is to have a relaxing, dedicated time with your partner. Do not allow anything to distract you.

Silence your phone, log off your social media accounts, turn off those ESPN and CNN alerts, and get the dog a busy bone. It is time for you and your partner only.

 Check your attitude

Truth moment: as busy, working mommas sometimes we can show up to situations with a bit of an attitude. Your toddler skipped their nap, the dishwasher broke your favorite coffee mug and left little pieces everywhere inside, you spilled flour on the floor, you waited on hold for 45 minutes and the customer service representative was NOT helpful….and on and on. We all have things that ruin our day and tarnish our attitude.

Remember, this is our relaxing, romantic at-home spa date night. Bring the energy, the flirtation, and the fun! You and your partner deserve it. 

Set the mood

Grab a quick cup of coffee for a caffeine boost, spray some perfume to make you feel sexy, and get in the mood for relaxation. 

Use some dim lighting or fairy lights to set the mood. Here are my favorite candles! The notes refillable candles are reusable. Just buy new wax pellets instead of a new jar each time! I also love these Chesapeake Bay candles which are soy candles instead of more toxic paraffin wax and will light up your room with an amazing scent. Check them both out below.

Turn on the smooth R&B playlist or spa music in the background to set the ambiance.

You can also use a diffuser and diffuse smells like lavender or peace and calming.

Facial

• Substitute these face masks for this DIY face mask recipe:
  • Combine 2 tbs of yogurt and 2 tbs of lemon. Let sit for 20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water.

Pedicure

• Substitute this pedicure bucket for a clean and empty plastic storage container
• Substitute this foot mask DIY foot mask recipe:
  • Hot water, 2 tablespoons of vinegar, and a handful of Epson salt, add a few drops of essential oil to the water when soaking your feet

Massage

• Substitute this massage oil for an oil you have at home like coconut oil or olive oil

Step By Step At-Home Spa Date Night Idea

1. Start up your essential oil diffusers. I love these refillable candles and these soy candles. Use a relaxing calming scent. We used lavender and peppermint.
2. Light candles for the ambiance because it creates such a pleasant atmosphere. We used unscented candles so the smell wouldn’t compete with the diffuser.
3. Turn on the tunes. My favorite is spa music, but you can choose whatever soft music you’d like!
4. Take a hot bath.
5. Fill up your buckets with warm water.
6. Add your favorite scented soap.
7. Add Epsom salt.
8. Soak feet for 20 minutes.
9. Use pedicure tools to clean up toenails.
10. Dry feet and apply feet mask and face mask. Leave both on for 20 minutes.
11. Exchange massages using massage oil.

Green Pan

Inexpensive non-toxic cookware. This is the first non-toxic cookware I’ve ever purchased! I purchased these after first hearing about PFAS and the dangers associated with the non-toxic coating on the pots and pans I had. They were the most inexpensive and highly rated cookware I could find at the time. I’ve had my Green Pan skillets for about 3 years now. The pan cooks my food evenly and is free of toxic chemicals, but over time the non-stick properties do wear off.

13. Rain barrel

Are you looking for eco friendly Christmas gifts for a gardener you know? Get them a rain barrel! Rain barrels are a gardener’s dream. The purpose of a rain barrel is to collect rain and collect it.
